Re: SAD DELTA BLUES MHS '70 REUNION NEWS
Maybe some of you were expecting this. But because of the increasingly bad projections about the surge of the Delta variant, it is with much regret that we have together decided to cancel the catered Saturday and Sunday Reunion picnics and game events. An informal "Bring-Your-Own-Food" picnic will still take place Saturday Sept 11 at Via Paraiso Park at 12:00 noon. And the Friday Sept 10 golf tournament at Monterey Pines is still "on."
We had been proceeding, hoping that the Delta variant news might improve. When we started planning, we felt that two outside picnics would be the safest way to proceed. But then Delta happened. Now booster shots are being rolled out. And we have received several cancellations in the last few days citing Covid / Delta concerns. At this point nobody knows how bad this highly contagious Delta variant will get. And the news just keeps getting worse, so we had to cancel. Let's try to think of this as a postponement until Summer 2022 instead of a cancellation. In summary:
1) Saturday picnic and gameday is cancelled and the Sunday picnic is cancelled.
2) An informal "Bring-Your-Own-Food" picnic will be held at noon Saturday Sept 11 at the Via Paraiso Park picnic area. Picnic area is no longer reserved, but benches will probably be available on a "first come, first served" basis. Questions? Contact Joan Costello at beachbreak112@aol.com

4) Mini bios. Lynn is also encouraging everyone to continue to send her mini bios and pics. She is pleased with the response so far. Since hard copies now won't be printed, the deadline for bios has been extended to October 1. Lynn will be emailing digital versions to all 1970 MHS classmates on the email list. Creativity, humor, personality and some good stories and photos/visuals are encouraged. The bios don't need to look like a LinkedIn resume or some sort of job application!
5) The planned "Monte Vista School" pilgrimage for MV alumni late in the day Saturday is no longer happening. A compilation of received "Monte Vista Memories" will be emailed soon. (In case some aren't aware, Monte Vista is going to be transformed into a K-8 school! And Colton is closing permanently at the end of 2023!!? Monte Vista as a middle school? Huh?!!)
6) Zoom reunion. On a weekend sometime this Fall, we are planning on a virtual "Zoom" reunion. The key is breakout rooms, which help facilitate small group interactions and one-on-one conversations. Details to follow.
7) As those who sent in sign-up sheets already know, Joan Costello has not cashed any checks and all checks received are now being shredded.

We are planning a bocce "tournament" and social event at the two courts on the grounds of San Carlos Church / San Carlos School.
Bocce is a fun, low-key social game that anyone can play without prior experience. It is a combination of lawn bowling and shuffleboard, along with some luck.
Robert Stanton and Derek Morris will be the bocce organizers. Equipment and instructions will be provided. Charge per player is $15, which will go towards snacks, fun prizes, and a court maintenance donation.
Advance reservations are required. There are 16 spots total and we have 8 spots remaining at last count. (Note contact Robert or Derek directly to make advance reservations. Actual advance payment of the $15 will be made directly to Susie Henderson via the registration form which will be attached to the email to be sent out later in April.)

Milchor "Mel" Green and Gerald Armstrong are organizing an 18-hole golf outing at Del Monte Golf Course in Monterey. This is the first time we have had reunion weekend golf at the great Del Monte course. Mel has arranged a special rate for the MHS Class of 1970 with course owner Pebble Beach Resorts. Green fees will be $50 which includes cart. Tee off times start at 10:10 AM Saturday morning.

Music Update
The DJ handling Saturday night music and audio will again be Ed Knott, who did a great job in 2015. Ed will be provided with a detailed playlist for the entire evening of meet and greet, dinner, and dancing. There will be some audio surprises in store throughout the evening, including possibly some "name that tune" type games. Volume levels will be managed so dancers can rock out while those not on the dance floor can still have conversations! Derek Morris is coordinating the music committee and is looking for volunteers to help with the playlist (see below).
Stay tuned for more communications! Please spread the word and send us the email addresses of classmates whose addresses you have! Again, do not assume that we have everyone’s current email address. Better to get two emails than none at all!

As baby boomers growing up in Monterey during the 1960s and early 1970s, we were in a unique musical era. For one, we experienced the best pop music in history. How many people can say they grew up with the Beatles?! We saw them on Ed Sullivan in 1964 when we were age 11-12. We experienced in real-time each of their groundbreaking albums as they grew artistically during the Sixties. We then witnessed and their breakup in 1970 as we were graduating from Monterey High at ages 17-18. And after high school during college in the early 70's we heard the first solo recordings of George, Paul, John and Ringo.
The Beatles changed the world. They and many other artists that followed launched the tremendous creative musical explosion of the 1960s and 1970s.
Example: the artists below all had #1 songs just in the two years of 1969 and 1970 alone.

Secondly, remember also that in Monterey during the summer between 9th and 10th grade in 1967 we experienced the world's first major rock/pop festival. The legendary and historic Monterey Pop Festival took place on June 16, 17 and 18 at the Monterey Fairgrounds, with a seating capacity of only 7000. Were you there? This music had a world-shaking impact that we still feel today. A life changing experience; we got to see many of our internationally known musical heroes perform live in our home town when we were just age 15. Jefferson Airplane, Simon & Garfunkel, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Buffalo Springfield, The Association, Janis Joplin with Big Brother & The Holding Company, The Byrds, Country Joe & The Fish, Laura Nyro, Al Kooper, Booker T. & The MG's, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Mamas & The Papas, Eric Burdon & The Animals, Grateful Dead, Steve Miller Band, Ravi Shankar, Blues Project, Electric Flag, Scott McKenzie, Johnny Rivers, Lou Rawls, Otis Redding and others. The documentary Monterey Pop by DA Pennebaker, who recently passed away, is awesome.

Remember all those Sony transistor radios in the early-mid 1960s? They sold massively then, helping fuel the pop music boom on AM radio. Kids finally had their own independent music listening devices and were not dependent on their parents' musical record player/stereo system or their parent's music! Transistor radios offered musical freedom! Prices of transistors and transistor radios dropped dramatically by the late '50s and early '60s and many of us walked around with little radios glued to our ears. Later in the 1960s FM radio emerged as another creative outlet as did album rock.
So after much discussion, the consensus of our Music Committee is to focus on the great music from our era of 1962 to 1974. This time period really is when we "came of age" musically from age 10 to age 22. From fourth grade through college. Our Wonder Years.
Is this 1962-1974 time period rather arbitrary? Of course it is to some extent! But we are sticking with it because it is perfectly representative of our "school years" which is the unique time period which we are celebrating. We are going back in time a bit musically to help reconnect with our collective past. It is a cliche but true: this is the soundtrack of our lives. Fourth grade through college. Age 10 to 22. To extend music into later eras or prior eras is just not as good a fit though there were many great songs before and after.
For our DJ, we welcome the return of the great Ed Knott of Ed Knott Productions, who did a fantastic job at our 2015 reunion. This time Ed will be playing from a more specially-curated and defined playlist which reflects the consensus of our Music Committee. There will be some fun audio surprises including perhaps novelty songs, TV theme songs, and TV commercial jingles. A "name that tune" game is being discussed. Stay tuned.
One thing to note about "volume" - DJ Ed Knott will arrange his sparkling Bose speakers / PA system so that those dancing can rock out and go crazy - while still allowing for people in the room outside of the dance area to be able to talk to each other! Good conversation and good dancing music volume will coexist at this reunion! No strained vocal cords and damaged eardrums!
If you want a really quiet private conversation and fresh air you can also step outside into a very nice upscale single-family home neighborhood. Or you can simply walk the grounds of the Elks next to the pool. Just don't fall in! League champion varsity MHS swim team members will be in attendance but don't rely on them to save you; they will be too busy partying. You are on your own!
In closing, the evening's theme is expected to be "The 1970s." Details to follow. This theme suggests a wide range of clothing/outfits for those who want to dress in keeping with the theme. We will have some classic disco songs during the evening. But that will be an exception and not the rule. It will not be "disco night." The 1962-1974 time period already has plenty of great danceable music without having to resort to the late 1970's disco which to me personally is mostly a musical aberration. Still, there are a few great, fun disco songs which have become classics themselves that will probably be included on the playlist.

We want people with a strong point of view and a serious love of the power of music! We've already had some great discussions and email exchanges. But we are just beginning efforts to assemble a playlist. There are many creative ways of "representing" the 1962-1974 era!
Fortunately, with the power of computers, the Internet and mobile phones, we figure it will only involve 10-15 hours per week of your time. Plus a few hundred daily emails and phone calls! Piece of cake!
